It’s well known around Manchester Creative and Media Academy that one of our most recognisable slogans is: Our Students Are Winners!

And year 11 student at MC&MA (Boys) Adam Walker is just one shining example.

Adam, who is in 11WC, could be set to join the British Olympic swimming team if he succeeds in the National Swimming Trials he is currently training for.

The City of Manchester Aquatics Swim Team (COMAST) member trains eight times a week. Adam said he is working hard to achieve his goals.

“I’m a few seconds off the national qualifying time, but when I go to nationals I can prove it [speed] to everyone.

“If you get in the top three, you get into the British Trials. If you win that you get into the British team and go about with them. If you do well you go to France, Italy – wherever they take you. After doing up you get into the Olympics.”

Golden inspiration

Adam trained with USA Olympic gold medal winner and the 100m backstroke world record holder Aaron Peirsol at Manchester Aquatics Centre in December, and he was more than inspired by the experience.

“He said you need determination. He felt like quitting at one point but you have to go through that because it does get stressful because you’re in the pool, out, in, out – you have hardly any time to do anything else,” Adam said.

“It does get to the point where you think ‘can I be bothered’, but look what Aaron has achieved.”

Talking of potential achievements, Adam will be racing this weekend on March 11 and 12. A perfect opportunity to build up his credentials ready for his burgeoning swimming career!
