The Year 11 BTEC Construction group were given a rare honour today; a guided tour of the Central Library and Town Hall extension’s refurbishment. The project’s aim is to modernise and make the structures fit for purpose in 2012.
Changes in the way council and library services operate and engage with the public have meant more people friendly buildings are needed. On the tour MCMA’s pupils were shown how the library is being adapted, a bright new Children’s zone is being created where nursery rhymes and songs will entertain youngsters. An area for teenagers to work on school projects or play on games is also being installed. The role of individual trades was highlighted with the work of scaffolders particularly impressing the students.
At the end of the visit the pupils benefitted from a series of Careers Talks from construction professionals, including an Architect and Construction Manager. The visit was facilitated by Michele Smith at Manchester City Council.
