Six members of Bridgewater’s Year 9 have embarked on a journey into world of comic strips, magical powers and distinctive costumes. They’re benefitting from Comic Smart, a collaboration with Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU), which aims to develop creative writing skills in young men around the theme of superheroes.
Today’s session run by MMU students Khalid Choudhury and Duncan Ayerst investigated the strengths and weaknesses of superheroes such as Spiderman and Batman, their backstories and what makes comics compulsive reading.
The pupils’ first creative task involved generating a Facebook profile for their own superhero. After much scratching of heads the creative juices started flowing and some great ideas emerged. With such imagination future workshops are destined to be a roaring success.
Later workshops will cover story planning, role models, character development and motivational thinking. The programme will culminate in a celebration event at MMU for the boys and their parents.
