Twenty Year 9 students benefited from an imaginative employability workshop organised by Business in the Community at the Factory Youth Zone, Harpurhey on Wednesday 26th February. Leading UK employers including KPMG, PWC, Yorkshire Bank, Wates Construction and Shoesmiths Solicitors helped facilitate the event along with Jobcentre Plus.
The day started with a motivational talk by Kieran Toal, a partner at Shoesmiths. Kieran emphasised the need to focus on career goals and the importance of dedication and determination in achieving them.
A speed networking event then followed, were the Year 9s got to mix with pupils from four other schools and ask the employers present questions about their jobs, educational background, skills and what tips they’d give a young person thinking about a career.
Some common themes came out of the networking, including the importance of good communication and team working skills, working hard at school to get the best grades possible and picking a career or job that you enjoy.
Finally the pupils were mixed into teams and set a task of building a giant pyramid, to illustrate the importance of teamwork.
The event was highly enjoyable for all involved. Asked what the Year 9s enjoyed most, responses were evenly split between “talking to the business people” and “building the pyramid”.
