Early February saw Year 11 pupils get a first-hand account of student life from two current undergraduates, Lizzie Calvert and Adam Sangster. The Huddersfield University students’ presentation lifted the lid on all aspects of academic and social life.
The honest assessment explained how lectures and seminars work and the amount of independent study required, along with the challenge of meeting and getting along with new people. Living away from home was discussed, whether in university halls of residence or private accommodation.
The importance of sound money management was discussed and the presentation illustrated how to budget for term time expenses such as rent, food, textbooks and mobile phone etc. Student grants and loans were explained, along with repayment terms.
The advantages of paid work and volunteering were stressed, highlighting the importance of developing transferable skills such as time management.
