Pupils from Year 9 got the inside track on how to succeed in the workplace in a highly enjoyable day of activities facilitated by Bernie and Rob on behalf of the Transformation Trust for Barclays. The Barclays Life Skills programme seeks to unlock potential in young people and help them get the right job, manage their money, and get on with other people.

The activities started off with pupils building confidence and self-belief and developing their communication skills. After a number of tasks the students were given the opportunity to practice public speaking, giving a brief talk about their proudest achievements. One pupil stated after the session that this activity had been “great” and that it had “given me the confidence to get up and speak”.

The year 9 workshops then focused on people skills, giving the Year 9s insight workplace behaviour. The difference between aggressive and assertive behaviour was dealt with in an amusing role place activity. The importance of resolving disputes in a calm and controlled manner was stressed. The importance of working effectively in teams was also covered and the importance of good body language was stressed throughout the day.

The student feedback was very positive and it was clear the learners had both enjoyed and benefitted from the workshops.
